Baker & Daniels Cuts 5 Associates & Others, Imposes Staff Wage Freeze

In a second round of layoffs since December, Indianapolis-based Baker & Daniels has cut more than 15 positions.

The 320-attorney firm has also imposed a wage freeze, according to managing partner Tom Froehle, on what the Indianapolis Business Journal describes as "all operational staff."

Froehle confirms that nine staff positions have been cut, but declines to specify the total number of layoffs, the publication writes. Citing an unnamed law firm source, it says the new layoffs include five Indianapolis associates and, split between the Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind., offices, two administrators, four paralegals, three administrative assistants and two marketing professionals.

In December, Baker & Daniels laid off 22 individuals.

Besides Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, the firm also has offices in South Bend, Ind.; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.

Obviously not good news for these few individuals.  However, in the big picture, April is more than half over, and the monthly tally of layoffs is (as previously predicted by yours truly) greatly diminished from the March numbers.  It could be only the eye of the storm, or a glimmer of hope for the still-employed.

Baker & Daniels is also going to defer start dates for half its incoming class by “up to a year.”
