A Tennessee-based law firm with 14 offices in southern states and a significant presence in Louisiana is expanding westward and opening its first office in Texas.

Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz announced today that it will be acquiring seven-attorney Spain Chambers in Houston. Baker Donelson has about 600 attorneys in offices in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, London and Washington, D.C.

“We were looking for a group with experience in energy to complement our Louisiana offices. If you’re going to hire an energy lawyer, Houston is the place to go,” Scott D. Carey told the Tennessean. He is the managing partner of Baker Donelson’s office in Nashville, Tenn., and he chairs the firm’s solar-energy initiative.

Spain Chambers has a general business practice, according to its website. However, the firm focuses on litigation, energy, construction and financial services, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “Many of our clients would ask us if we had a Texas presence, because if so, they would be interested in having us as their law firm there. It’s no surprise that many New Orleans firms, the firms we consider to be our major competition, have Houston offices,” said Roy Cheatwood, who serves as managing partner of the Baker Donelson offices in Louisiana.
