Travis Gosa’s mother-in-law cleans apartments for a living in Beloit, Wisc. When one of her clients gave Carol Markin a stereo speaker left behind by an evicted tenant, she gave it to Gosa.

Hearing something rattling inside, he opened the speaker up and found a bag containing a stash of cash. It was dyed red, and the bag also happened to contain a loaded 9 mm handgun, reports the Rockford Register Star.

Gosa called police, and they determined that the money came from a 2004 robbery of First Federal Bank in Beloit, the newspaper recounts. They also determined that the speaker came from the apartment of the girlfriend of a man convicted in the robbery.

The undisclosed amount of cash, in $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills, didn’t startle him as much as the gun, says Gosa, 31. “That freaked me out. Banging around inside a speaker like that, it could have went off.”
