Bankruptcy a ‘Hot and Sexy’ Field for Weil Gotshal’s Associates

Bankruptcy is a “hot and sexy” practice area right now, and summer associates at premier bankruptcy law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges feel the attraction.

Seventy percent of the firm’s summer associates chose a bankruptcy-group rotation this year, compared to just 55 percent last year, New York magazine reports. The group is hiring 14 first-year associates this fall, twice last year’s number.

Ronit Berkovich, a Weil Gotshal associate who moved to bankruptcy from corporate law, told the publication that bankruptcy is a “hot and sexy” field.

“Lawyers like to see their deals on the front page of the Wall Street Journal,” she said. “These days, bankruptcy makes great cocktail conversation.”

Whatever else, Bankrupty is NOT hot and sexy.  Neither are the practioners at Weil Gotsheil or any other firm.  They’re just like any other lawyers…some are sleazy, but not sexy.

Bankruptcy is the only growing field right now. What a shame. Thanks, Dubya!

Bankruptcy is the only growing field.  What about foreclosures?  I think you overlooked the fastest growing field of law, that is foreclosures.  Firms specializing in that field (on either side, particularly representing banks since the homeowners are poor) have experienced INSANE growth over the last 2 years.

Bankruptcy is about as hot and sexy as Joe Lieberman in a pair of tighty-whities.

Now, administrative law with a subspecialty in public utilities: THAT’S where all the smokin’ hot and steamy action is!

“Bankruptcy is the only growing field right now. What a shame. Thanks, Dubya!”

Someone needs to broaden their news source beyond Air America.

Bankruptcy law won’t be hot and sexy until there’s a “Debt Workout with the Stars!” reality contest show on Fox TV.

I understand that Ed McMahon is available to host it.

Kinda doubt the president of the US can do much by himself.  Might want to blame a bunch of lawyers working in Mortgage companies and banks for the housing problems.  When I was looking for an office, I found a great place just two doors down from one of those short-term/high-interest loan outfits.  Bankruptcy practice here I come!  Title loan companies, excessive medical billing, needing that newest high mileage hybrid vehicle, when you can’t afford the monthly payment, using your credit card too much - those contribute more to bankruptcy problems than most anything else.

Many Americans are experiencing financial crisis because of their refusal to delay gratification.  We all want what we want when we want it - NOW !

Lax lending standard didn’t help much either.  But where does personal responsibility come into play?  You can’t always blame others for the predicament into which you put yourself.

In response to BGT, I didn’t overlook foreclosures. The people I know who do them have clients who aren’t paying… actually we do work for the mortgage companies… but the people who represent the homeowners are not getting their money…

Since when is taking advantage of someone’s pain “hot and sexy”?  And what about protecting privacy when chatting up at cocktail parties.  Never know who is listening.
