A more than 500-attorney Indianapolis-based law firm is opening its first office in the Southeast, raiding two partners from the Atlanta office of Bryan Cave Powell Goldstein to establish a foothold in the city.

Although Barnes & Thornburg is opening its Atlanta outpost with Stuart Johnson and Jason Bernstein, it expects to hire laterally to set up a full-service office there soon, reports the Indianapolis Star.

The firm also has offices in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Washington, D.C., as well as Elkhart, Fort Wayne and South Bend, Ind. Much as it did in Chicago, where it opened an office in 1994 with one attorney, according to Chicago Lawyer, the firm plans to grow aggressively.

It now has “more than 85 attorneys and other legal professionals” in the Windy City, according to a Barnes & Thornburg press release that provides additional background information about Johnson and Bernstein. Their respective practices focus on transactional and intellectual property matters.
