Bats said to live in an elevator shaft at an Arkansas courthouse made a courtroom appearance on Thursday.

The bats—more than two dozen of them—interrupted a trial at the Sevier County Courthouse in De Queen, Arkansas, the Associated Press reports, citing a story in the Texarkana Gazette (sub. req.). People in the courtroom screamed and ran from the room, the story says.

One deputy caught a bat and held it by the wings for photos; the bat tried to bite him.

Hundreds of bats live in an elevator shaft, according to the county’s chief administrative officer. Circuit Judge Tom Cooper said bat guano is everywhere at the courthouse.

A pest control expert is being called in to suggest solutions.
