Clark Gable, Gary Grant and Joe DiMaggio were all customers of Oxxford Clothes, a Chicago-based custom suitery.

And so was the impeached former governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. Observers are agog over testimony by an Internal Revenue Service agent yesterday at his federal political corruption trial contending that the ex-gov and his wife spent some $400,000 on clothes between 2002 and 2008.

While this six-figure expenditure was certainly not a crime, it paints a sadly telling portrait of the couple’s activities and aspirations, writes Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich:

“It’s a portrait of a man out of touch and out of control, consumed by appearances, striving to belong to an elite of leading men and titans that the best suits in the world would never let him enter.”
