Defense lawyers promised the jury in former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s federal political corruption trial that he would testify.

But then they debating whether he should do so, as the moment of truth neared today in the Chicago trial. Sam Adam Sr. said prosecutors haven’t proven their case, so the governor should take a pass on testifying, reports the Associated Press. However, his son, Sam Adam Jr., said Blagojevich should take the stand since the jury from the outset was told he would.

Now the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting, relying on unidentified sources, not only that Blagojevich is leaning against testifying but that the defense plans to rest without calilng a single witness.

Although Blagojevich had been expected to take the stand this afternoon, U.S. District Judge James Zagel stopped the trial early for the day and told defense lawyers to mull their strategy overnight before making a final decision, according to the newspaper.
