Blowing Kisses at Jailed 'Client' Reportedly Led to Criminal Case Against Lawyer
Nina Marie Backon said she was representing Eric Edward Wilamowski as his attorney.
But the Michigan lawyer’s affectionate treatment of Wilamowski led authorities to question the now 23-year-old man, who said she had been blowing kisses at him in May 2010 because the two were engaged to be married, reports the Detroit News.
Backon, 35, whose law license is now suspended, is also accused of having smuggled drugs and tobacco into the Oakland County Jail. After a tearful apology and a lecture by the judge concerning her ethical responsibilities as an attorney, she was sentenced today to 18 months of probation for giving a prisoner contraband and delivery of a controlled substance. She was also ordered to have no contact with Wilamowski.
Meanwhile, she is currently jailed for violating her probation in an earlier reckless driving case.
“She is paying a huge penalty for this,” says her lawyer, Neil Rockind. “Not just the fines and sentence but the loss of her license to practice law and reputation in the legal community.”
