Boston Firm Axes 40 Support Staff

No lawyers were let go this week from Boston's Goulston & Storrs, but some 40 administrative staff and paralegals were given pink slips.
Co-managing partner Kitt Sawitsky told the Boston Business Journal that the cuts corrected an overstaffing of secretaries at the firm. Now the secretary to attorney ratio at the firm is 1-to-3.
“A ratio of 3-to-1 was the goal, and as we entered these economic times and had not achieved the 3-to-1 ratio through attrition, we decided that we wanted to get to that ratio, and we were going to do it now,” Sawitsky is quoted saying.

Well, there you go. Support staff don’t have this “attrition” thing down either. Wouldn’t it be easier just to tell staffers on their date of hire when it is that the firm expects them to leave, absent further notice to the contrary?
