Reportedly urged by his father to stand up to a school bully, a 10-year-old boy allegedly threw a punch at the other Edmond, Okla., youngster.

Now he is facing a potential jury trial in a misdemeanor assault and battery case, after the city attorney decided to pursue charges, reports KFOR.

If convicted in the Edmond Municipal Court case, the unidentified fifth grader could be sentenced to as much as 60 days and a $500 fine.

“Edmond Police tried to do the right thing and let the parents handle it,” says attorney Scott Adams, who is representing the defendant. “But I guess the Edmond city attorney doesn’t believe that parents in Edmond can take care of their own kids and discipline their own kids.”

Steve Murdock, who serves as city attorney, declined to comment.
