Boy's 'little free library' gets temporary exemption from town's ban on detached structures
A boy who loves to read has fought city hall and won, at least until Oct. 20.
As a result of action on Monday by the Leawood, Kansas, City Council, 9-year-old Spencer Collins will be able to put his “little free library” back into his front yard, report the Kansas City Star, KSHB and KMBC.
Collins had been forced to move the library into his garage after the town warned him the structure—which looks like a miniature house on four legs—violated city code banning detached structures in the front yards of single-family homes.
On Monday, the city council approved a moratorium that exempts little libraries from the law until Oct. 20. During that time, the city plans to survey Leawood homeowner associations to gauge support for a permanent change in the ordinance to allow the little libraries.
“I want you to allow little free libraries because I love to read,” Spencer told the council, standing on a milk crate to reach the microphone.
