A management partner at Bryan Cave says the law firm is taking steps to ensure that deferred associates have appropriate “resources,” but isn’t confirming a report that the law firm is paying $70,000 to disappointed new hires.
Above the Law published the $70,000 amount, based on a tipster, but a statement by Bryan Cave management committee partner Dennis Fleischmann didn’t mention figures or get into specifics. Fleischmann did say that measures by Bryan Cave vary, based on differing circumstances at the firm’s offices.
Here is part of Fleischmann’s statement, provided to the ABA Journal and Above the Law: “We believe it is important that we consider our existing and future associates and maximize the opportunity for all of our associates to be engaged in challenging work as early as possible in their careers. Bringing on too large of a group too soon will not achieve that goal. We are sensitive to the challenges this creates for those who will not be able to join the firm as soon as they would like, so we are taking steps to ensure that they have resources to assist them during this time. The circumstances that exist, as you would expect, vary from office to office. The measures we are undertaking, therefore, also vary in order to most effectively address those differing circumstances.”

So they’ll wake up in the morning,
As another day is dawning,
And they know they’ll have another mess o’ beans.
