Layoffs in the county that includes Chicago are affecting prosecutors and employees in the court clerk’s office.

The Cook County circuit court clerk notified 170 employees of layoffs on Monday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and the Daily Herald. The cuts are a response to a 16 percent budget reduction imposed by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

Cook County Clerk Dorothy Brown didn’t specify which employees were losing their jobs, but she did say in a statement that the layoffs will “put a high strain” on her office’s ability to carry out its responsibilities.

Last week, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said she will have to lay off more than 100 administrative employees and as many as 25 lawyers, the Chicago Tribune’s Clout Street blog reports. Preckwinkle has asked Alvarez to cut 10 percent from her budget.
