After a dozen lawyers from the Sacramento office of Bullivant Houser Bailey jumped ship to Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell, the firm announced today that it is closing its 20-year-old office in California’s capital, effective March 1.

The move leaves 100-lawyer Bullivant, which is based in Portland, Oreg., without a number of leaders, reports the Am Law Daily.

They include: M. Taylor Florence, who previously chaired Bullivant’s board; Scott Bartel, who headed the corporate finance and international transactions group; Regina Schroder, who was in charge of tax practice management; Daveed Schwartz, who oversaw antitrust and trade regulation; and Eric Stiff, the head of the Sacramento office.

A Locke Lord Bissell press release provides further details.

“Most of us have worked together for many years and we wanted to continue practicing together. We talked to many different firms, but Locke Lord stood out for its entrepreneurial and forward-thinking attitude, as well as its commitment to grow the corporate and complex litigation practices in California,” said Bartel, in the release, of his group’s decision to join the 650-attorney firm..

Both firms have traditionally been known for their work on behalf of insurance companies.
