Butler Snow has named L. Howard Belknap as its new chief operating officer.

The firm announced the move in a Wednesday press release. Belknap joined the firm from Baker & McKenzie, where he had served as COO and executive director of the firm’s New York office.

“Howard has been a leader for our country and a top-notch executive who has helped to lead some of the largest and most successful law firms in the world,” said Donald Clark Jr., chairman of Butler Snow, in the press release. “We are thrilled to have him join the Butler Snow team, and I look forward to working alongside Howard as we set the vision for our firm and implement our strategic plan.”

According to the press release, Belknap has had a long career within the Am Law 200 ever since retiring from the U.S. Army where, among other things, he served as strategic planner and speechwriter to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell. In 2002, after leaving the Army, he joined Shaw Pittman as director of administration. He also served as director of business development at Morgan Lewis & Bockius. In 2008, he joined Baker & McKenzie.
