The captain who made international headlines after a recording of a conversation in which he argued over and apparently refused a coast guard command to reboard the grounded Costa Concordia cruise ship went viral has been found unfit to command.

The ruling Wednesday by Italy’s top appellate tribunal, the Court of Cassation, allows the captain, Francesco Schettino, to be kept under house arrest in his Southern Italy home, Reuters reports.

Schettino, who was accused of piloting the massive liner too close to the shore of Giglio in an effort to salute local residents there, faces multiple manslaughter charges in the fatal accident. At least 30 people died.
