Race car driver Helio Castroneves, who has won both the Indianapolis 500 and the Dancing With The Stars television competition, has been federally indicted in Miami along with his attorney in a tax evasion and fraud case.
Castroneves, 33, his Michigan lawyer Alan Miller, 71, and his sister and business manager Katiucia, 35, have been accused of working together to conceal income of more than $5 million over a period of four years, according to the Indianapolis Star and the Associated Press.
The alleged scheme involved a deferred royalty plan, over which Castroneves is claimed to have had impermissible control, and some of the money he earned eventually went into a Swiss bank account via his sister, the prosecution contends. Castroneves is accused of hiding millions of dollars in offshore accounts, AP reports.
The news agency says Miller declined to comment, and the other two defendants couldn't be reached. All three are scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami tomorrow. Castroneves is a resident of nearby Coral Gables.

Castroneves pled not guilty on Friday saying he will he will treat this case like a race against the IRS. He offered the usual defense that he is only a race driver not an accountant. His alleged offshore “deferred royalty plan” will be a technical tax defense. Jurors may find the transaction difficult to understand.
