The government is dropping all charges against a Texas lawyer who had been expected to go to trial this week on charges related to multiple attacks on his wife.

The government had alleged that Jeffrey Stern was responsible for the attacks, as part of a capital murder-for-hire plot. But, citing a lack of evidence, a lead prosecutor said in a written statement that the case against will not be tried, reports KTRK.

Stern, his wife, Yvonne, who backed him throughout the ordeal, and their children “are relieved and grateful that their two year nightmare is over,” said defense attorney Paul Nugent in a Tuesday written statement.

“Upon a final review of their case, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office realized there was not credible evidence to proceed,” the statement continues, “and has dismissed all charges against Jeff Stern. The Stern family appreciates the outpouring of public support and requests that their privacy be respected during this time of healing.”
