Chicago Bartender Fired for Racist Rant on Facebook
A bartender at a nightclub on Rush Street in Chicago has lost her job because of a racist rant on Facebook criticizing her customers.
The bartender at Proof Nightclub used the N-word and made other pejorative remarks, report NBCChicago.com, the Chicago Sun-Times and CBSChicago.com.
The bartender defended her posts after the club’s marketing and events manager posted a comment reading, “Hey Hitler, this is in violation of your social media contract. Please remove it ASAP.” The bartender responded, “R U joking? I have a life outside of the club.”
The Sun-Times interviewed IIT-Kent law professor Lori Andrews, author of I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Networks and the Death of Privacy. “People can be fired for their social network posts,” Andrews said. “The First Amendment only gives you rights against the government, not private employers.”
