Jean Podrasky has no actual knowledge of her cousin’s views on gay marriage.

But the lesbian woman is optimistic that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. “will go in a good direction,” according to the Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Now.

Podrasky is attending oral arguments in the first of two gay marriage cases on Tuesday with her partner of four years, her sister and her niece. She will be sitting in a section reserved for family members and friends of Roberts.

“He is a smart man,” Podrasky said of Roberts. “He is a good man. I believe he sees where the tide is going. I do trust him. I absolutely trust that he will go in a good direction.” But she does not know whether Roberts will be influenced simply because he has a family member who is a lesbian.

“Everybody knows somebody” who is gay, she told L.A. Now. “It probably impacts everybody.”

Podrasky, a San Francisco resident, hopes to marry her partner if the court strikes down California’s ban on gay marriage.
