Lawyers with the Alliance Defense Fund say they will appeal a decision holding that a Christian photographer’s studio violated New Mexico anti-bias laws by refusing to photograph a lesbian commitment ceremony.

The fund represents Elaine Huguenin, co-owner of Elane Photography, report the Religion News Service, the Associated Press and the Albuquerque Journal. Huguenin believes that marriage is a union between one man and one woman.

In a May 31 ruling, the New Mexico Court of Appeals said the studio is a public accommodation and its refusal to photograph the ceremony violated the New Mexico Human Rights Act.

According to Religion News Service, “The case has become a cause celebre among some conservative Christians, who argue that this and other cases represent a threat to believers’ rights to disagree with homosexuality.”
