The top lawyer in Chattanooga, Tenn., has been exonerated in a criminal probe over his reported practice of contracting out some $15,000 in legal and secretarial work to his own law firm.

Although there were technical violations of state law, said District Attorney General Russell Johnson, of Kingston, Tenn., in a press release, he and the state comptroller agreed the matter should not be pursued because there was no intent to defraud, reports the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Additionally, the practice by the city attorney’s office had been ongoing since 1962 and was well-known, Johnson noted.

The article doesn’t include any comment from city attorney Mike McMahan. However, he said earlier that he had done nothing wrong and was following a long-standing practice.
