City Attorney Seeks Payday-Loan Claimants with Intern's 'Pay Me Maybe' Video
An Oct. 1 deadline is looming for some California consumers to file claims under a statewide settlement with two payday loan companies.
That fact is being publicized in a new video called “Pay Me Maybe,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle blog SF Gate, the Huffington Post and the San Jose Mercury News. A summer intern with the San Francisco City Attorney’s office made the video parody of the Carly Rae Jepsen song “Call Me Maybe.”
The video features a help number (866-497-5497) and these lyrics: “Hey, you just scammed me and that is crazy / But here’s the number, so pay me maybe/ And all your other scams try to break me/ But here’s the number, so pay me maybe.”
Under the terms of the 2007 settlement, claimants are entitled to repayments ranging from $20 to $1,800. Two classes of claimants are eligible, the Mercury News says. The first consists of those who took payday advance loans at a Money Mart or Loan Mart between January 2005 and July 2005. The second consists of those who took an installment loan at a Money Mart or Loan Mart store between July 2005 and March 2007.
Intern Jeanne Pastore made the video, and Emily Wade of the Cosmo Alleycats sang the revised song.
