Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen announced a request for more information about the business practices of Chicago-based Groupon this week.

The move was prompted by concerns over the expiration dates imposed on discounts sold by the coupon company to consumers, which may violate Connecticut law, LegalNewsline reports.

“It appears that what Groupon Inc., sells or offers may fall within the definition of a gift certificate under Connecticut law,” Jepsen said. State law prohibits gift certificates from being sold or issued subject to an expiration date.

While multiple private civil suits have been filed challenging the expiration dates, Connecticut may be the first state to raise those questions with the coupon giant, LegalNewsline reports.
