Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy says he plans to sign an executive order banning people on federal terrorism watch lists from buying guns in the state.

Malloy, a Democrat, said at a news conference on Thursday that he plans to work with the White House to obtain the terrorism lists, report the Connecticut Post, the New York Times and the Hartford Courant.

Malloy’s action would make Connecticut the first state to bar those on a terrorism watch list from buying guns. His executive order would also ban gun sales to suspected gang members, according to the Connecticut Post.

Malloy said he’s not sure what kind of terrorism list would be provided to the state. The international terrorist watch list has more than a million names on it, while the no-fly list has nearly 50,000 names, the Connecticut Post says. The Courant, however, says the no-fly list is believed to have about 10,000 names.

Those who are barred from buying a gun in Connecticut could appeal to the state Board of Firearms Examiners.

President Obama has called for federal regulations that would bar gun sales to those on the federal no-fly list.
