In an effort to protect skateboarders and roller skaters from injury, the city of Laguna Beach, Calif., has banned them from some of its steepest streets and established rules of the road. But the new provisions are controversial.

Amidst reports—which may be inaccurate—of skateboarders reaching speeds of up to 60 mph on city streets, the city now sets a maximum speed limit of 25 mph, reports the Coastline Pilot.

It also requires skateboarders to obey all traffic laws and refrain from stunts.

“I read the prohibitions in the ordinance,” said John Shad at a recent city council meeting. “This will criminalize our children. It’s tough enough being a kid today. Have a heart.”
