Residents of a northern Wisconsin community are wondering how a sheriff’s deputy accusing of killing six people in a shooting spree got hired.

“How did he get through the system?’” asked David Franz, who lived in Crandon where the shooting spree took place, the Associated Press reports.

A Crandon police SWAT team shot deputy Tyler Peterson yesterday afternoon, hours after the shootings, Crandon’s mayor told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Police believe Peterson entered an ex-girlfriend’s house and began shooting, killing her and five other people.

Peterson was a Forest County deputy sheriff and a part-time policeman in Crandon.
