County Prosecutor Protests, to No Avail, Being Called as Witness in Child Sex-Abuse Case
Despite a top Lafayette County prosecutor’s argument that sitting in on an investigative meeting years ago didn’t make her a witness in a criminal case, a Missouri judge has refused to remove Kellie Wingate Campbell from the witness list.
She and two assistants will potentially be called to testify in a complex family child sex-abuse case dating back decades that involves multiple defendants and alleged victims, according to the Associated Press and the Kansas City Star.
“It’s a preposterous notion that I would be called as a witness in my own case,” Campbell told Judge Dennis Rolf. “One meeting we sat in on does not suggest we investigated anything.”
If she is required to testify, as defense attorney Tim Larimore is seeking, the potential conflict of interest could force the county to bring in a special prosecutor to try the case, the AP article says.
