County Removes DUI ‘Wall of Shame’ Per Judge’s Ruling

Nassau County, N.Y., public officials have decided to restrict a controversial Web-based "Wall of Shame" after a pretrial defendant complained that the posting of her name, photo and charges, violated her rights.

The move to limit the wall to include only the names and images of those convicted of a crime came a day after State Supreme Court Justice William LaMarca ruled in favor of Alexandra Bursac, a 27-year-old Plainview woman who challenged the wall postings, Newsday reports.

Bursac's lawyer, Brian Griffin, intends to continue to pursue the challenge even if Bursac is convicted. The wall, Griffin asserts, is another form of punishment.

County officials, however, maintain that displaying the wall is a deterrent. Newsday notes the names and photos of those charged with DUI will continue to be released to the media.
