A man who reportedly made his next-door neighbors’ daily lives a hellish experience for years is now banned from residing in his own home.

After 40-year-old Carl Bridson finishes serving a six-month sentence for harassment, he will only be able to visit his home for brief periods scheduled in advance, under an unusual court order imposed by a magistrates court in the United Kingdom. The tactics Bridson apparently used against his neighbors include shouting abuse, playing loud music for hours late at night and doing construction work calculated to prevent them from sleeping, diverting a gutter downpipe to flood their newly constructed conservatory and vandalizing their car, reports the London Times.

The jail term and ban from living in his own home were imposed after Bridson violated an earlier restraining order.

“It has taken five years of misery but I hope it shows other people in the same position that they can do something about it,” says victim Andrew Pennington, 45, who lives in Farnworth, not far from the city of Manchester. “No one should have to go through what we’ve been through. We felt like prisoners in our own home. We had to complain again and again before the police would take us seriously, but they did eventually.”
