Court escapee who cuffed deputy and took his uniform was captured after 14-hour manhunt, police say
A prisoner brought Monday to a downtown Detroit courthouse for sentencing in an armed robbery and carjacking case was on the run for 14 hours after authorities say he overpowered and handcuffed a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy, put on part of his uniform, walked out of the building and carjacked a woman parked nearby.
But Abraham Pearson, 25, also known as Derreck White, was recaptured Monday night as he walked along an interstate freeway, as he may have been trying to hitch a ride toward Florida, police said. Meanwhile, Deputy Harrison Tolliver, 63, who was stabbed in the neck several times with a sharpened comb at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice is recovering, according to the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ.
Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said an investigation is ongoing to determine if there were any security issues need to be corrected.
Pearson now faces 10 new felony counts, WXYZ reports, including assault with intent to murder and escape from jail through violence.
