Courthouse Burglar Takes Judge's Robe; DA Calls Incident a 'Wake-Up Call' re Security Issues
A burglar broke into a Wisconsin courthouse and stole a judge’s robe last week, but nothing else.
The culprit, who was recorded on surveillance footage, will be difficult to identify because he was wearing a heavy coat and sunglasses, reports the Ashland Current.
Ashland County Judge Robert Eaton had a spare robe and hence appeared on the bench as usual after the incident.
However, District Attorney Kelly McKnight told the newspaper he was concerned about a lack of security at the courthouse and called the break-in “a wake-up call” about the need to take further measures before more serious damage potentially occurs.
Officials are scratching their heads over the motive for the bizarre burglary, since items of value including cash and computers were not touched, according to United Press International.
“This is one of the oddest ones,” said Ashland Police Chief John Paitl. “The guy breaks into a facility, knows he’s on camera and then, as far as we know, he just takes the judge’s robe.”
