A South Carolina man has been charged with shooting and wounding a young mother and her stepfather outside a courthouse in Chesterfield County on Wednesday.

Police say 57-year-old Curtis Gorny was charged after a car chase in which he fired at officers pursuing him, report the Charlotte Observer, the Associated Press and Carolina Live. Gorny eventually ran out of ammunition, according to the police account. He was stopped near a school where police laid stakes in the road, flattening Gorny’s tires.

Gorny is accused of shooting Olivia Weaver, 21, and her stepfather, Johnnie Nolan. Weaver was shot in the face and stomach, while Nolan was shot in the arm. Both were expected to survive.

Gorny told police he was the father of Weaver’s 6-month-old baby. He was at the courthouse for a paternity test.

The incident follows another courthouse shooting this week in Delaware where a gunman killed two people before he shot himself.
