Cozen O’Connor can write off $448,468 in legal work for a would-be Philadelphia mayor without having the money characterized as a political campaign contribution, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court says.

Under the city’s campaign finance law, the forgiven debt doesn’t count as a campaign contribution because the money wasn’t expended “for use in … influencing the election of the candidate,” the court explained in its Monday written opinion (PDF).

The law limits contributions to $10,000.

The law firm successfully represented U.S. Rep. Bob Brady in litigation over whether his name would be on the 2007 Democratic primary ballot, Philadelphia Daily News reports. Both Brady and Tom Knox, the Democratic opponent who challenged his ballot listing, then lost the primary.
