Cozen O’Connor is launching a Pittsburgh office and expanding its labor and employment practice with the addition of 20 lawyers from Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney.

Cozen O’Connor announced Monday that it is adding 17 more lawyers from Buchanan Ingersoll, in addition to three Buchanan lawyers who joined the firm last week. The Legal Intelligencer (sub. req.) has a story; Cozen press releases are here and here.

Nine lawyers are going to Cozen’s Pittsburgh office and 11 are going to Cozen’s Philadelphia office. Most are from Buchanan Ingersoll’s labor and employment group.

Sources told the Legal Intelligencer there could be as many as 10 more lawyers leaving Buchanan Ingersoll for Cozen O’Connor.

Cozen O’Connor CEO Michael Heller told the Legal Intelligencer that the firm had about 50 labor and employment lawyers in more than a dozen offices before the latest additions.

“A lot of middle-market type firms have gotten out of the labor and employment world. That has created a void for firms like ours,” Heller told the publication.

Buchanan Ingersoll CEO Joseph Dougherty released this statement: “We fully expected these departures and have already taken the appropriate steps, as we move on. Departures in the legal world happen. Players come and go but it’s the culture and values of a firm that endure.

“While most of these attorneys are from our labor & employment section, strong assets and core shareholders remain as part of the 50-attorney practice group who can meet any of our clients’ needs. We’re coming off of our best financial year in firm history and remain fully focused on continuing our momentum and growth.“
