Back in February, when Day Pitney announced that it was letting go 66 staff members, no attorney layoffs were planned.

But today the 400-attorney Northeast regional firm announced that it is adding 20 associates and counsel to the layoffs list, according to an internal memo published by Above the Law.

“Unfortunately, the demand for legal services has continued to decline, with the result that we have found ourselves with excess capacity,” the memo states, referring to the earlier statement in February that no lawyer layoffs were planned. “While no one can predict the future, we hope that, by taking these steps now, we can avoid the need for additional reductions in the future.”

The memo thanks the lawyers being let go for their contributions to the firm and notes as well that the firm is pushing the start date for incoming associates back to January of 2010 as an additional cost-cutting measure. An unspecified stipend will be paid to these associates beginning in September.
