A deadbeat dad paid more than $300,000 in back-due child and spousal support so he could return to the United States.

The amount is the largest amount in back support ever collected in the United States, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The man was unable to renew his passport from Hong Kong until he paid the money, Los Angeles County officials told the newspaper.

The man, whose name was not released, fled to China after a judge in 2005 ordered him to pay $6,000 a month to his ex-wife and daughter. Later he changed his mind and decided to return to the United States, but learned passport policy would block his return until the money was paid.

The man’s attorney negotiated the payment of $311,491, which also covers interest. It was paid earlier this week.
