A Debevoise corporate partner died Friday evening after apparently jumping from the 22nd floor of his New York City apartment by Central Park.

Stephen Hertz had a practice focusing primarily on mergers and acquisitions for private equity clients, according to his law firm bio. The New York Daily News said he was 55 years old, while the New York Post listed his age as 54.

Debevoise released this statement: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of our partner and friend Steve Hertz. Steve was an exceptionally warm and caring person, extraordinarily dedicated to our clients, and generous to his colleagues. He will be profoundly missed.”

Anonymous sources told the New York Post that Hertz sent a suicide note to his ex-wife, who contacted Hertz’s psychiatrist. The psychiatrist called police, according to the story.

Hertz’s bio says he was experienced in private equity and venture capital structures and issues, and regularly advised on financings and securities offerings in connection with private equity acquisitions. He attended the University of Chicago law school, according to his attorney registration information.
