It isn’t just in Chicago courtrooms that Joseph Lopez can hold his own.

The Illinois attorney was involved in a recent altercation in a criminal courthouse holding cell with a now-former client facing probation-violation and weapon charges, the Chicago Sun-Times (sub. req.) reports.

Lopez and the Cook County sheriff’s office confirmed that the incident had occurred, but did not provide details. No charges were filed, and an investigation is ongoing.

“Whatever occurred was in self-defense,” Lopez told the newspaper. “When someone grabs at you, you have to act. I didn’t do it for no reason.”

However, he holds no grudges and wishes his ex-client the best, Lopez said.
