Since May 21, attorney Jim Carney has been biking with his wife and children on a transcontinental trip from Astoria, Ore., to Yorktown, Va., taking a long-held dream vacation that he began working toward after completing the Boston Marathon in 2005.

As of yesterday, the group was nearing an 11,500-foot pass in Yellowstone National Park.

But despite the challenges of biking an average of more than 60 miles a day during the 70-day trip, Carney, who practices at Carney, Davies & Thorpe in Janesville, is still working two hours a day with the help of modern law practice technology, recounts a State Bar of Wisconsin journal article.

“I probably couldn’t have done this five years ago,” he tells the legal publication. “Fortunately I have supportive partners and staff, and I can use the network to correspond. I was just able to make it work, and, for others who can, I would recommend this type of experience.”

Carney’s Ten Tires blog provides a day-by-day account of the experience. He will celebrate his 52nd birthday in August, a month after the family completes the bike trip.
