Despite a Slow Two Weeks for Lawyer Layoffs, Blog Remains Pessimistic

Law firm layoffs have slowed for the last two weeks, raising the question: Is the worst over?
Major law firms confirmed just 121 layoffs (including 60 lawyers) last week and only 353 layoffs (including 100 lawyers) the week before, the Law Shucks blog reports. Four of the last five weeks were among the slowest of the year.
“Is the tide turning?” Law Shucks asks. Well, no. “The pessimist in us suspects we’ll see another wave as first-quarter results are finalized,” the blog says.
So far this month, 232 lawyers and 556 staffers have been axed at major law firms. The total for the year: 3,381 lawyers and 5,280 staffers have lost their jobs in layoffs.

Maybe they are right. April could be only a momentary respite. Certainly the market took quite a hit today. It seems like whenever we go a week without some artifical, government-manufactured “good news” event, the market resumes its correction for accumulated abuses.
