Despite the slowing national economy that has led to layoffs at some law firms, the Spokane, Wash., office of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis is doing just fine.

It has added seven lawyers to its attorney roster over the past 18 months, and expects to bring in an eighth this fall, which would bump the total number of attorneys in the Spokane office to 18, reports the Journal of Business, in a lengthy article about the secrets of its success. Corporate transactions and intellectual property litigation are the office’s fastest-growing practice areas.

Todd Reuter, a Spokane partner, credits the legal and geographic depth of the 1,600-lawyer international firm for the success of his office.

“The complexion of the business community here has changed,” he says. “We have clients here that are being acquired by and acquiring international companies. Those clients need a law firm that has access to other markets.”
