Already in custody on charges related to an earlier drug case, authorities say a Nebraska man ran a multimillion-dollar marijuana operation from the Douglas County jail last year, with the help of a visitor.

Unfortunately for him, the visitor was a federal government informant wearing a wire, authorities say. And he was also a local attorney, Terry Haddock, WHNS reported in an article reprinted in the Daily Nonpareil.

Defendant Shannon Williams, 42, contends Haddock was representing him as legal counsel at the same time he was relaying their conversations to the FBI, the newspaper recounts. But Bellevue police officer John Stuck, who is serving as a lead investigator in the case against Williams and 10 other individuals, says Haddock made clear from the outset that he was not Williams’ attorney.

In either case, the situation has dropped jaws in the legal community.

“I’m not surprised the government wanted to do it,” says D.C. “Woody” Bradford, a longtime Omaha, Neb., practitioner. “But I’m shocked that an attorney was willing to do it.”

The article doesn’t include any comment from the 52-year-old Haddock.
