A federal judge last night granted the directed verdict sought by the plaintiffs in a high-profile music downloading case against a Boston University physics graduate student.

But the jury still has a role: It will determine whether the copyright violations Joel Tenenbaum admitted during his trial testimony yesterday were willful and determine how much he must pay, reports the Metro Desk blog of the Boston Globe.

Damages in the case, which is being tried in federal court in Boston, could potentially add up to as much as $4.5 million.
