Disappointed lawyer sues over NBA coach's decision
A disappointed basketball fan who is also a Florida lawyer has filed a lawsuit against the San Antonio Spurs because the team coach sent four key players home before a game against the Miami Heat.
Lawyer Larry McGuinness claims fans suffered economic damage because they paid a premium price to see the high-profile Nov. 29 game, report ESPN and Forbes. The class action suit filed in Dade County claims a violation of the state’s deceptive and fair trade practices law.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has said he sent players Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green home to rest during the team’s fourth game in five days. The NBA fined the team $250,000 as a result.
McGuinness bought his ticket for the game on the resale market. “It was like going to Morton’s Steakhouse and paying $63 for porterhouse and they bring out cube steak,” he told ESPN.
McGuinness does not intend to keep any money if damages are awarded. “”I am not a horrible, greedy, terrible lawyer,” he told Forbes. “If I get anything out of this case, it is being donated to the Hurricane Sandy fund. I filed this lawsuit purely as a disappointed fan.”
