A Colorado lawyer is dead, and his wife is being held on charges that she shot him in a domestic dispute observed by a sheriff’s deputy staying with the couple.

It’s not the first time a spouse was accused of shooting at Trinidadian lawyer Jim Tatum, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Houston lawyer Dick DeGuerin represented a prior wife during the couple’s divorce who shot at Tatum, allegedly because he was “slapping her around,” he said.

DeGuerin bluntly told the newspaper that Tatum’s death “is 27 years overdue,” according to the account of the interview.

Tatum’s current wife, Ann, has been charged with second-degree murder. The ex-wife was either never charged or charges were dismissed, DeGuerin recalled.

Las Animas County District Attorney Lee Hawke, who has recused himself from the case, told the Rocky Mountain News in a separate story that he considered Jim Tatum a friend. “He could not have been a nicer guy to deal with,” he said. “He was a big, Texas kind of guy, as easy to get along with as a lawyer as you could ask for.”
