Double Whammy for 'I Did It. So What?' Defendant: Jury Convicts, Voters Didn't Repeal Death Penalty
An unrepentant pro se defendant in a California capital murder case was, not surprisingly, convicted Wednesday following his testimony to a jury earlier this week that “I did it. So what?”
But Nathan Burris, 49, also lost out on another possible chance to derail a potential death sentence when California voters on Tuesday declined to eliminate capital punishment, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Found guilty of the Aug. 11, 2009 murders of his former girlfriend, Deborah Ross, and her male friend, Ersie Everette III, as well as special circumstances of lying in wait and killing multiple victims, Burris is scheduled to begin a penalty hearing before the same jury on Thursday.
If he is not sentenced to death, he will get life imprisonment without parole.
