Durham County, N.C., District Attorney Michael Nifong asserted yesterday he was only doing his duty in pursuing allegations against three Duke lacrosse players.

Nifong’s attorney said his client had reasons to believe a crime was committed, the Washington Post reports.

“It is not unethical to pursue what some may see as an unwinnable case,” attorney David Freedman said in his opening statement.

Bar prosecutor Katherine Jean contended Nifong intentionally concealed evidence in the case and misled the media.

Nifong is defending ethics charges by the North Carolina State Bar Association that could result in disbarment.
