An anti-abortion group launched a campaign today to oust at least one judge on the Kansas Supreme Court, based on her authorship, on behalf of a majority of the court’s justices, of abortion rulings.

The executive director of Kansans for Life tells the Associated Press that the group will campaign against the re-election of Justice Carol Beier, who authored majority opinions it opposes, and may target other justices, too.

In response, a court spokesman said the justices’ decisions are based on the state’s constitution, statutes and regulations.

State Rep. Marti Crow (D-Leavenworth), an attorney who supports abortion rights, characterizes the move as a “vendetta” against Beier. “It hurts the independence of the justice system, which is very key to everybody’s rights,” she says.
